June 2009

A short time back my grandparents took my mother, my fiancé and my sister and myself out to breakfast a chain restaurant that specializes in breakfast food. We arrived to see that this restaurant was packed as usual, but we were all seated promptly. Our waitress took our drink orders, brought them back and proceeded to take the food orders. Here’s where the fun starts:

We were all pretty hungry so 4 out of the 6 of us ordered omelets, to which every time one of us said the word “omelet” in our order the waitress went into this long spiel about how they serve 5 egg omelets that are baked and they will take at least 15 minutes to prepare. Then she felt the need to restate this fact after taking all of our orders; my annoyed grandfather just responded with “Whatever” to this last speech.

The waitress did not lie, it did take a LONG time for our food to arrive, which we anticipated. However we did not anticipate the way it would arrive. Instead of bringing as much as she could on a tray (I did not expect her to bring it all as it was a lot of food when you factor in toast, syrup, etc.) she brought only one to two items at a time, starting with the warm syrup for the French toast my grandmother had ordered which did not come until almost last. Then she would bring someone’s breakfast and someone else’s toast. Then it would be butter for someone else and sauce for another omelet.

FINALLY she brought out the last omelet and we noticed that my ever patient sister, who had been watching everyone else get their 15 MINUTE OMELETS, still had not received her simple eggs Benedict order. We inquired with the waitress, and she said it would be right out. But nothing came. When she came back to check on our food, we asked again and she said she’d check. Still no food. My grandfather flagged her down again and asked about my sister’s food and mentioned she had been waiting a very long time. The waitress then hysterically blurts out, “I’m sorry I can’t do anything!!! I keep calling for it, but they won’t make it!!!! I’m sorry!!!!”

We felt kind of sorry for her, so we called over a manager and explained what the waitress just told us and he went into the kitchen to check on the food. It came out a short time later along with a mushroom sherry sauce that was supposed to come with my omelet which I had forgotten about. No apology about the delay. Nothing. And as we looked at the tardy food it appeared that it had been sitting under the lamps for awhile. My sauce was gluey and so was the hollandaise on the eggs Benedict.

I used to love that restaurant because they served decent breakfasts, but I don’t think I’ll be heading there for awhile because of the hassle we had to put up with.

Hey Dev,

We just returned from a wonderful dinner out with our two sons and their girlfriends.

My husband made reservations earlier in the day. Our entire party arrived early and checked in. We waited in the bar for approximately 5 minutes, which was fine. It was a cool evening and the hostess took us outside where there were two round tables put together; it was not conducive to conversation. There were no tablecloths and the tables did not look clean. I asked if we could have a table inside and was told that there would be a wait. The restaurant was not full and there were empty tables for 6 visible. I reminded the hostess that we had made a reservation and asked to speak with the manager. She left for a very brief time and returned and sat us at a lovely table inside. I thanked her.

I am wondering what might have been a better way to handle this situation. My sons, and their girlfriends, seemed a little uncomfortable when I asked for a different table and to see the manager when told there would be another wait.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dear Don’t Mess With Mama,

Did the restaurant inform you when the reservations were made that they only had outside dining available at your requested time? Or did you request to eat outside when you made the reservations? If such was the case, then their reluctance probably was because other diners had made reservations to eat inside. If neither was the case, then you should have been informed when you made reservations that there were no tables available inside the restaurant.

You certainly had the right, regardless of the circumstances, to ask if a table was available inside. A restaurant that wants to do well will try its best to please its customers, which this one did. Diners need to keep in mind, however, that restaurants also have to meet other customer’s needs, and that those with reservations have priority.

I’m not sure, Don’t Mess With Mama, why your sons and their girlfriends were uncomfortable with your request, unless it was done in an angry or brusque manner. Negotiating to have one’s needs met is more pleasant for all, and is usually more effective, if done in a politely assertive manner.

The next time that you make reservations to dine at the restaurant, be sure to state that you’d like to sit inside. And when you arrive, say “hello” if you happen to see me there. I’ll be the one dressed up all spiffy with polished horns and martini in hand.

We’ve all been in the situation where everyone else is ready to order but we just can’t make up our mind on what to select from the menu. So we tell the server to take everyone else’s order first. The pressure mounts as almost everybody has placed their order and we still haven’t made a decision. We have individual tolerances on the amount of pressure that we can handle, and express stress in different ways. The diner in this Casual Mafia video displays his stress in a rather unique manner:

My hairy ordeal happened in a local establishment that I used to frequent quite often. This day I decided to order a grilled cheese. They make a fabulous grilled cheese using three different cheeses and sour dough bread. It’s awesome. Well it was. I had just taken a couple of bites when I noticed something sticking out of my sandwich. At first I thought it was just a string of burnt cheese, then quickly realized it was on the cut edge, so I peeled the bread back to see hair. Not just one but a little clump of hair in my grilled cheese. I was instantly nauseous. Had I just eaten hair?

So I tell the waitress who was very kind, apologized and ran off to tell the manager. Who never apologized, and just said he’d give me a whole 10% off since I had already eaten some of it, even though I explained that had I seen that hair I wouldn’t have eaten at all. Nice! Needless to say that was the last time I ate there.

Almost Hell For Another Diner, Not For Me

June 16, 2009 Illness & Medical Stories

Wife and I and our best friends (he a doctor) were having dinner at a famous steakhouse in Brooklyn (no names here, let’s just call the place Peter L.). We were digging into our steak and as a family was leaving the room, an older gentleman collapsed, motionless, to the floor on the way out. [...]

When our son was about 18 months old, my wife and I thought we might try taking him out to a restaurant. He was a generally quiet, well-behaved kid, even at that age, and we made sure we brought lots of quiet activities and even some Cheerios and other toddler snacks for the wait. We [...]
