Creepy Couple’s Invitation Alarms Server

This incident took place a few years ago. I used to work part time as a waiter in the restaurant of a moderately priced hotel in my hometown here in England. I was 16 years old at the time, just trying to earn a little extra money during my classes.

I always worked evenings after my classes at college were over, and this particular Saturday evening I was catering to a party that had hired our Green Room for a private event. It was the final hour of my shift by which point the party had left, so I was in a hurry to get the table cleaned up so I could leave on time. Trying to do this single-handedly was not easy.

I was about halfway through picking up the mountain of plates and glasses, when I suddenly noticed a couple standing in the sliding door frame watching me. They looked to be about late twenties to early 30s, kind of scrawny, just standing there watching me. I know it sounds cliché to say I had a bad vibe or they looked creepy, but they did. The Green Room was empty so there was no reason for them to be standing there watching me clean.

I said hello and asked if they needed any help. The couple introduced themselves, but they had really simple and kind of rhyming names. They explained they were staying in the hotel, and the woman suddenly extended her hand which contained a large sum of cash; about £50. That itself was unusual as here in England we don’t really have much of a tipping system. While you can tip, it’s not considered compulsory, and as I said before it was a moderately priced hotel, certainly one not warranting such a huge tip.

I asked them why they were handing me all this money. They just laughed and explained, “We were watching you earlier and we think you’re cool. Fancy having some fun back in our room?” Alarm bells are now ringing off in my head. I was a socially awkward and shy teenager back then and didn’t really know what to say. Why would a couple be asking a teenage kid back to their hotel room? Everything about them just seemed fake from their names to their friendly demeanour.

I just replied, “I’m sorry Sir, Madam, but I can’t do that.” I wanted to just get away from them, but they were blocking the sliding door which was my only exit. The couple again insisted that I should join them for some fun, taking on a more softer tone. I nervously told them no again, and explained I had a lot of work to do before I finished my shift.

I was afraid they might try something and contemplated screaming for help, while silently praying that they would just leave me alone. Eventually they did, but not before the woman shrugged her shoulders and mumbled some curses under her breath. I just stood there shocked and a little alarmed. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before while I was working there, and I was a little unsure what to do. But I felt really uncomfortable.

I stayed in the Green Room for a little while before returning to the kitchen, and told the restaurant manager what had happened. She was alarmed and angry, and very kindly allowed me to finish the rest of my shift in the kitchen with the rest of the staff while she went to the hotel’s manager to complain about the creepy couple.

I quit my job there not long afterwards per the insistence of my parents. So I’m not really sure what happened. Maybe they were just pranksters messing with me. Maybe they were just weirdos being overly friendly. But my primary belief is they were dangerous individuals with bad intentions.

As a bisexual woman, I've experienced this in my life. It is terrible and I'm sorry you had to deal with it!!

This is absolutely disgusting! I'm so sorry you had to go through this. Adults need to control their hormones instead of hitting on teenage kids.
