Accident and Mishap Stories

This isn’t a “hell” story, but I thought it would be interesting to share nevertheless. A couple of years ago, my parents and I (all adults) spent a three week vacation travelling across the USA, so naturally we visited many restaurants and diners along the way, and this is one that stood out.

I remember Singapore. I learned a lot there. For one, Jack Sparrow doesn’t know Jack Shit about Singapore. In five years of working there I never once saw a tight corset, let alone it removed publicly with zeal and gusto. Quite the opposite, it’s a place of lawfulness. It’s a place of fearsome efficiency. And […]

It wasn’t a regular Thursday night; we were jammed. To make matters worse, Eric decided not to show up because he had a concert to go to that night, little fucker. You know the type of night I’m talking about – the managers are sweating from head to toe, bartender screaming, and all the servers […]

Yesterday evening my husband and I went out to a well known restaurant in Tampa, Florida for what we thought would be an uneventful dinner. The restaurant is a wonderful sports grill founded by one of Tampa’s football heroes.

This is a story of one dinner that I ruined and one that could have been ruined by… me. My first job was a busboy/food runner at a fairly upscale restaurant (linen tablecloths, complimentary sorbet between course).

Servers have a lot of bad days. With so little control over who and what comes our way, and an income 90% dependent on the largess of our clientele, days can be rollercoasters of emotion. I was working as a waitress at a hotel restaurant. It was my first job so I didn’t have much experience and the restaurant was always woefully understaffed. People would just call in 5 minutes before their shift started and cancel or simply not turn up – and for some reason the managers never fired […]

I was once dining out at an Italian restaurant which I had been to many times before. I was just eating my garlic bread when I heard what sounded like water dripping. I ignored it and carried on eating when I saw water dripping from a crack in the ceiling. Okay no big deal, I’m […]

I once worked for, what is now, a large hotel chain that had a string of restaurants in the Washington DC/Baltimore area. I started as a “Manager-in-Training.” This required that I learn all of the stations in the restaurant, everything from cashier to dishwasher. This story begins on a busy Sunday morning; the after church […]

It was a Saturday afternoon at the restaurant where I work. It was usually busy on Saturdays and today was no exception. It was also the middle of summer and on this particular Saturday we were very busy, not slammed, but still pretty hectic. It was quite hot in both the restaurant and the kitchen […]
