HEART ATTACK GRILL

Can you imagine a restaurant boasting that it serves food that is harmful, and whose owner advises diners not to eat at his restaurant every day or "it'll kill you"? That's the unique marketing angle of Heart Attack Grill located in Tempe, Arizona. The menu includes the massive Quadruple Bypass Burger (2 pounds of beef, 12 slices of bacon, 4 triple-thick slices of cheese, a whole tomato and half an onion), high caffeine cola, beer, Flatliner Fries, and unfiltered cigarettes. Food is cooked in 100% lard. Of course, the restaurant's registered trademark is, "Food Worth Dying For." Diners (called "patients") who finish a Triple or Quadruple Bypass Burger are escorted to their cars afterwards in wheelchairs pushed by scantily-clad waitresses wearing naughty nurse uniforms.

Ironically the restaurant's founder, Jon Basso, used to operate a chain of personal fitness centers. Basso, who goes by the name of "Dr. Jon", wears a doctor's coat along with a stethoscope draped around his neck. He calls his food "nutritional pornography."

Not surprisingly, Heart Attack Grill has had its share of controversies, but not as much as would be expected from the food police. Rather, most of it arose from the Center For Nursing Advocacy which objected to the personification of nurses as "brainless sluts", and expressed concerns about stereotypes arising from nursing being "the most sexually fantasized-about profession." The restaurant also received notice from the State of Arizona that it was violating a statute regarding usage of the title "nurse." Needless to say, the complaints have generated a lot of publicity for the restaurant whose website states that it's never spent "a single advertising penny."

Below is a video from NBC's Dateline program about Heart Attack Grill. More videos are posted in the restaurant's website.

GOT MILK?

A restaurant owner in Switzerland hoped to use human breast milk for some of the dishes he wanted to offer on a special menu. However, his dream was sucked down the drain by authorities after he advertised for mothers willing to sell their breast milk. You can read more about it here: Breast milk menu too titillating for diners.

After hearing about the Swiss restaurant's plans, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called for Ben and Jerry's ice cream to use human milk instead of cow's milk in their products. Ben and Jerry's response: "...a mother's milk is best used for her child."

Since we're on the topic, the Girls Behaving Badly TV series did a prank in which diners purchasing coffee were given shots of "organic milk" directly from a  breast (it was a fake one). Here's the video [Mature Content]:

Girls Behaving Badly also did a prank in which people were served samples of cheeses originating in various countries. Afterwards, they were informed that the cheeses were made from human milk, and pictures of the donors were shown to them. See the video here: Cheese Nips.

Eating Exotic Meats

The Olympic games in Beijing, China, have helped to introduce to the world some of the country's cuisine, including, by Western standards, unusual foods. For example, the video below depicts reporters from the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times dining at a penis restaurant. They appear to enjoy their meal up until when they're faced with an ethical dilemma involving one particular type of animal.

In some Asian restaurants, diners point to cages containing the animal that they'd like to consume for dinner. In an article published in the June 2008 edition of Men's Journal called, "I'll Have a Glass of Fresh Snake Blood, Please", the author, Lawrence Osborne, describes visiting such establishments in China, and eating an array of critters including seagull, dog, and donkey, ingesting bull semen, and drinking snake blood. Unfortunately, animals are often kept in small, filthy cages, and some are eviscerated alive for purposes of presumed libido enhancement. Some of the animals are endangered species that were smuggled into the country.

For more on this topic, check out the blog, Weird Meat, where the site owner describes eating a panoply of creatures.

Bubble Bath in a BK Sink

A worker who calls himself "Mr. Unstable" was filmed bathing nude in the sink of a Burger King restaurant. Mr. Unstable's bubble was soon burst when he soon became "Mr. Unemployed", as did other staff who were present. See the video that made big waves:

Wing Themed Restaurants

Many chicken wing restaurants sport a similar  theme - Hooters, Mugs 'n Jugs, Melons, Bazookas, Knockers...well, you get the point. Sales at these establishments total over a billion dollars a year. Sometimes, however, expectations might not meet the reality as this Mad TV video shows:

Foodborne Illnesses

According to a report issued by the Centers for Disease Control, there has been little progress over the last several years in reducing the incidence of some foodborne illnesses in the U.S. To help protect yourself before dining at a restaurant, try to obtain health inspection results (which is not always a simple task). Many agencies publish their inspections online. Some websites, such as Allfoodbusiness.com and HealthInspections.com, allow easy access to governmental sites.  Which states have had the most outbreaks of foodborne illness? Find out here.

Here's a video showing a ballsy dude pretending to be a health inspector. His ruse should have been apparent when he started eating some of the food. One has to wonder if he ever got busted for impersonating an official!
