Hubby Abandoned At The Dinner Table

in Couples Stories

My wife and I were on vacation in the Caribbean. We were eating in a nice restaurant by the beach, enjoying a leisurely dinner. For reasons I can’t remember, we got into an argument and she ended up leaving the restaurant. Unfortunately, I had left my wallet in my hotel room and therefore had no means to pay for our meals. I explained the situation to the waiter. The waiter, who was previously amiable, suddenly turned stern. He said he’d discuss the matter with the owner. The owner came to the table and grilled me about what happened and where I was staying, and asked for my name. He abruptly left me alone, facing my thoughts and the stares of other diners. Thoughts of spending the night in jail filled my head. I considered offering to wash dishes in the kitchen if the police arrived.

After about 15 awkward minutes, the owner returned and told me that I could go back to my hotel to get some money, but that I’d have to leave my watch as collateral. Happy to be released, I still faced the task of hiking a couple of hot and humid miles to the hotel since my wife had driven us to the restaurant. I found her sleeping when I finally go to the room. Long story short: I paid the bill to the ungrateful owner, got my watch back, and eventually forgave my wife.

Ungrateful owner?! Sounds like he was very understanding, since he didn't call the police. You went out to dinner in a foreign country without your wallet? You and your wife both sound like dumbasses.

I agree with Jess. You're lucky the owner was understanding. Would you have been? You're wife sounds pretty rude to leave you with no car or make sure you had a wallet, especially in another country. ALWAYS carry ID.

The owner acted appropriately; I am sure he has had to deal with many deadbeats. Your wife certainly got you back for arguing!

your wife is a total self indulgent bitch. i cannot believe you forgave her. sleeping while your husband is stranded with no wallet and no transportation? i would kill my husband. i would have taken her boarding pass and her wallet, boarded the plane home by myself, leaving her to figure that one out.

what a cunt.

And the owner was ungrateful? You are lucky you were not arrested and you and your wife need to grow up. Alcohol involved, maybe?

Wow. You and your wife are the reason 'the ugly American' stereotype exists. Grow up, both of you. Don't go to a restaurant, have a fight in the premises, have one storm off, then not have a payment for your food with you. The owner wasn't ungrateful…he was downright gracious, after the crap you put him through. You took his food, and were too stupid and immature to have a way to pay him for it. You should be more grateful he didn't call the authorities, and send you to a foreign prison cell, or out of his country early.

My wife had money in her purse. I wasn't expecting her to leave me with no means to pay for our meals!

Generally, in most places, leaving without paying for a meal is a crime. If the wife is carrying the only means of payment, then she's committed that crime.

Switch the genders — if a married couple had a disagreement and the only one carrying instruments of payment was the man, and he left his wife behind without paying, would you look at this story differently? If so, why?

Well don't argue with you wife because even if you're right you're wrong

Ungrateful?!?! You tried to commit a crime and the owner is ungrateful for letting you walk out of a restaurant without paying your bill with just a promise that you would come back just because of whatever cheap watch you were wearing at the time?!?! It's not the restaurant's fault that a grown man left his wallet in a hotel room. You're the ungrateful one. They should've just called the cops on you and let them sort it out. I wouldn't have believed your story for one minute. Just trying to get a free meal, eh?

I am 100% sure situations like that are a proven scam- pretend to "argue", then the person with "money" leaves and the stranded one tries to elicit sympathy from the owner to avoid paying the bill. This particular restaurant had probably been scammed like that once or twice, and while they should've given you benefit of a doubt and maybe acted A LITTLE nicer, there's absolutely no reason to call the owner "ungrateful".
