Beware Of The Double Dipping Granny

in Sanitation Stories

I was having lunch at a well known restaurant. You know the one which is known for their “famous bread bakers.” I was sitting at a table by the sample display – unprotected food sitting out for all to spread their germs on. Being in the health field, I was surprised that having unwrapped foods displayed without protection against contamination from customers was allowed.

While I was eating my lunch, I observed an elderly woman in her mid-seventies try a sample of the bread. She took one piece of bread, smelled it, and put it back on the tray. Then she took another piece of bread, tasted it, decided she didn’t like it, and put it back on the tray. To top it off, she took another piece of bread, bit it, put it into a dipping sauce, ate it, then walked away. This is a great way to spread disease. Next time you see one of these free sample displays, think twice and be aware that you might get more than free food – and end up spending the rest of the day on the toilet!

Saw this in Bangkok, Thailand. I know I'm going to catch hell for this but…I was in line at the breakfast buffet at the Sofitel when the Muslim lady in front of me lifted the cover of the pancakes and proceeded to pick them up, examine them, then return them to the serving tray. This woman if full Burqa then glared at me when I insisted that she use a fork. This cannot be normal behavior for Muslims…can it?

I think its normal behavior anywhere that basic hygiene isn't taught (that includes places in the western world too!)

I work in an office with someone like that. She nevers washes her hands after using the bathroom, then dips her hand into community chips, pretzels, what-have-you. I bring all my own food now. And this is someone in her early 60's. She should know better.

I'm male, been in the restaurant business for a long time, and always wash my hands with soap and water after using the toilet. It will never cease to amaze me the high percentage of "gentlemen" who do not even rinse off thier hands after using the bathroom.
Remember this when you try any sample anywhere, grab a mint from the bowl at the counter of the diner, or share food with anyone.

Oh, and New York John, If you really are a "John" that brings up a whole other set of health issues. (hehe)
