Outlaw Tea From Restaurants

February 5, 2010

in Dining Hell Commentary

I have wanted to get this off my chest for 20 years. I absolutely think they should outlaw people who order hot tea.

OK, I know you’re thinking that I’m crazy, but now that tea, especially green tea, is supposed to be so good for you, everyone is ordering it. When you’re a server with 12 tables at breakfast and hear ‘I’ll have tea,” you just cringe because in order to get that tea, you have to get a teapot, go to the kitchen to get the water, get a plate, get a dolly, get a lemon slice.

OK, OK… you’re right, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to do this, but it really sets servers back in time. They should be out in the dining room pouring coffee, pouring juice, delivering omelets, clearing plates, handing out checks, and doing credit cards.

There is no solution to this pain-in-the-butt item. I just wanted to vent a little. Thanks!

As a noncoffee drinker, when I order tea, I want tea! Sorry for all the extra work but that is service, and I find it hard to believe that all the supplies you mentioned aren't in the same service area for breakfast service, like in the dark ages when I worked as a server.Be prepared prior to service time. I tip at least 20% for good service and I am never asked if I want a refill for my tea, but the coffee keeps on coming.

I hate when someone orders hot tea for the same exact reason. I also hate when someone orders coffee, even though I am a coffee drinker. At my restaurant when someone orders coffee, I have to get one of our very small cups, a saucer, a sugar caddy, pour the half and half into a little pitcher since we don't have those little plastic creamer cups. Then there is always the person who wants milk instead of half and half. The milk is all the way in the back of the kitchen. I know this is my job, but it sucks and really backs me up when I'm busy. I can't help but cringe inside when someone asks for a hot tea and/or coffee. I also hate the coffee and hot tea people who won't stop talking long enough to drink their hot beverage. Then, since they have let it go cold, they need a whole new set-up. I can't just refill the cup, since it is full of cold coffee. I have had people do this more than 4 times in a sitting ( and the people at the table think this is hilarious for some reason) It makes me want to strangle them. But, you would never know I felt this way. Waiting tables makes you a very talented actress.

I agree with david. If you don't like your jobs, quit and become a hobo.

all these complaints about serving coffee or tea are idiotic. Jesus H. Christ people, if you're gonna have it on the menu have something decent! not those crappy dunkin donuts type coffee machines but how bout real starbucks or Peets coffee at least. then you could charge $1.75 a cup. Or if you're gonna have cheap stuff, do the "bottomless cup" of joe like IHOP or have a add water to the stainless teapot like Chinese restaurants do. I'm starting to think my fellow Americans really are hopelessly stupid

Why not outlaw people who want food as well. Think of the time you would save by not taking their orders or serving the food to their tables.

I find this amusing only because among us servers "hot tea" is a nightmare. I understand it is my job to get it but it is none-the-less a pain in the butt.

so is their food, their sodas and their bill. Why not whine about those things as well. Or even, cocktails where the server has to wait until the bartender makes them, that's gotta put them behind as well.

Damn I'm noticing many people here don't get the purpose of someone venting. These people will do the service with a smile, and still get you your shit. their venting just like everyone vents about annoying things in their day to day life and work.

It's ok to vent. It's human.

The problem is if you can't stand your job, then find a new one. Venting because someone orders a common everyday beverage with their meal is absurd. Venting about that rude table that treated you poorly or stiffed you, makes sense, but venting about bringing out a coffee or tea is venting about the most basic aspect of your job, serving customers.
