Unfairly Treated Waitress

in Kid Stories

There was once an incident at the restaurant where I work where a waitress got into trouble for something she didn’t deserve in my opinion. The incident happened when a baby boy belonging to a couple sitting at one table started to cry. While the parents tried to calm the baby, a snooty man sitting next to them suddenly and very rudely demanded they make the baby shut up. The outraged parents told him to mind his own business and things soon escalated into a shouting match.

The mentioned waitress went over and told everyone to stop arguing as they were disturbing the other customers. Unfortunately the snooty man complained to the manager that she had been really rude to him, and as a result she got into big trouble and nearly lost her job. It’s people like that stuck up snob that really get on my nerves.

Perhaps the waitress should have alerted the manager to the problem, and had him handle it, that's what managers are for.

As to the crying baby, no one likes a screaming kid in a restaurant or on a plane. It's up to the parents to comfort the child or remove him until he is more composed. Having a shouting match with someone your child is disturbing is rude in it's self. Parents need to know how to control their children when in a public setting, or keep them at home.

If this gets on your nerves that much, you probably haven't read the newspaper lately, or are aware of the really awful things that are going on in the world. Toughen up sweetie!

Sometimes calming of babies takes a little time, I read this as the man instantly got pissy about it. Which from my experience is likely what happened.

You need to get over yourself. What a douche. Yes it's up to the parents to calm them which it sounds like what they were trying to do. It doesn't happen instantly. I bet you're one of those idiots who gets an infection & calls the Dr. complaining because 30 min. after taking the first one because you're not cured yet. Children & babies are permitted in public places too & the parents are paying customers. You don't like it? Leave. It would probably improve the atmosphere of the place immensely.

Jack: If you're so concerned with what's going on in the papers, and judging people for being annoyed at something like this, then what the hell are you doing reading sites like "Dinners from Hell" in the first place?

Get a life, "sweetie".

First of all, the man had every right to ask those parents to control their screaming kid. If your child cannot behave in public as a parent it is your responsiblility to remove it from an area where s/he is bothering other people. And when someone complains, act like a decent human being and respect their right to enjoy a meal without listening to your kid. Second, the waitress was WAY OUT OF LINE disciplining customers. She should have informed the manager. I would have fired her.

A more experienced manager would have handled this better, or maybe he was just a jerk.

So You Want To Be a Banquet Manager

Come on guys, lets think logical. The child was a little baby and you can't just tell a baby to be quiet. The parents tried to calm the baby down and it was down right rude for that man to demand the parents make the baby shut up. In my opinion the waitress was unfairly treated.

No, you can't just tell a baby to be quiet. However you are responsible for your baby, and if he/she is crying, screaming, whatever, you should remove him/her from the room, and quiet them down. Why should every customer in the restaurant have to be annoyed, and have their meal ruined, by a screaming child? If the child can't be calmed down then the parents should leave the restaurant.

The waitress had no business admonishing customers. She should have had the common-sense to call her manager. The customer who complained was not the problem, the actions of the parents and the waitress were the problem. If I was the manager I would have fired the waitress. She sounds very immature and unprofessional.

I love how this young lady just asking a Customer to quiet down is so "out of line." Really, she did not do anything wrong. I think she was fully with-in her rights.

A manager has better things to do than handle snooty, spoiled ass customers. Obviously this man just wasn't used to being asked to do something. How sad for him.

I totally agree with you. That was not right at all.

Nowhere did it say the child was screaming, only crying. Babies can cry without screaming. Snooty Man is a jerk. Manager is a weenie. Waitress needs a better job. I hope she quit and found one soon after that.

Poor girl this is almost a no win situation and I'm sure it was just a quick response on her part to get the issue under control. I have to disagree with "Sarah" on this one. This IS part of a Managers job to keep peace in the Restaurant especially with disrespectful and rude customers. I know it can be unsettling to hear a baby crying and in most cases the parents do try to get the child calmed down sometimes it works sometimes it don't and in most cases they do leave. And then there are the ones who stay anyway and annoy everyone until they have finished their meal to those I say STAY HOME AND ORDER CARYOUT!!!!!
