The Smelly Man

in Diner Stories

I work in a busy restaurant and we have all sorts of people coming and going. But there was one customer that was quite frankly hard to forget. He was well known throughout my hometown as the smelly man because well – he smells. No that is an understatement, he reeks but I do not mean to sound mean when I say that. Every time he came in there was always a big circle of empty tables around him as all the other customers had moved away from him to escape his stench. When a customer did sit near him they would wrinkle their nose, look in all directions for the cause of the stench, and eventually discover it was the old man next to them and move. I did feel sorry for him though and wished I could have helped him, but he was causing some problems for our restaurant as customers were leaving us. My manager as a last resort had to ban him from the premises.

Sadly it's not uncommon for some older folks to lose their sense of smell or have it greatly reduced to the point that they don't even realize that they're offending others. It's also not uncommon for some older folks to not practice proper hygiene. Sometimes this is because it's difficult for them to bathe due to balance problems which makes it hard to stand up long enough to take a shower or get in & out of a bathtub safely. It wouldn't surprise me at all that this man lives alone with no one to help him out.

Excuse me rerere but I did not put up this story to read racist comments like that. I do a lot of anti racist work and I often find myself on the receiving end of abuse from hateful people like you. You should realise that that could really hurt someones feelings.

Actually, I do want to apologise for that hatefull and uncalled for comment. I do have many friends who are Muslim, and I don’t know what I was doing when I wrote that comment. Anyway, I am sorry.

I accept you’re apology and thank you. I do sometimes get less than friendly messages from members of certain hate organisations due to my anti racism work. I do not understand why people hate others simply due to their colour or religion and even sexuality. Because if all you have in you’re heart is hate then you have nothing. Thanks for reading my story and thanks for posting it Gregg!

Peace Lover…it’s “your”, not “you’re”. “You’re” is a contraction of “you are”. “Your” would be the proper form in the context of your post.

Oh, boy. I recall having a guy as a customer in a bar who smelled like horseshit — because he worked with horses. He was from a European country where they’re not as cleanly-washed and covered with strong-smelling deodorant soaps as we are. All he needed was one pretty girl that he wanted to meet to tell him like it is — and he started cleaning up before coming out for a drink.

Now, the real problem is with some of the elderly. At least the elderly woman who’d crap in her pants in our bar was accompanied by her son. I told the moron son three times that we couldn’t abide the smell of feces in the bar-room. He finally came clean and said that there was a maid/healthcare worker at home to clean it up but because they were out there was nobody to clean it up. I made it clear to him that when he was very small his mother changed his diapers regularly, and, guess what? Healthcare worker at home or not; if mom’s going out he will be responsible for her cleanliness if she’s no longer capable of doing so.

We felt really guilty when two weeks later this imbecile actually got his mom into a nursing home — and announced that he didn’t have to worry about “cleaning her up for the bar” anymore. What a dolt.

Thank you very much! I appreciate all the support I am given. Just one question, who exactly is John Lennon?
