Server with a Snippy Attitude

in Server Stories

This was about a week ago in a local mom and pop restaurant (where by the way Hilary Clinton once visited). It was our first time there and we asked the server, “Do you have any Hillary pictures? Her response was, “Just look around.” (With a “duh” expression on her face). We laughed and said oh yeah… lol!!!

Next, she served our breakfast entrées like a deck of cards – really fast, and then remarked, “I’m sorry… I tend to throw plates when my hands are on fire.” So we started to eat our meals when she said to my friend, “Do you want me to hold your coffee and keep you company while you eat?” (He didn’t even realize she had his coffee cup). My friend noticed a hair in his coffee cup and nicely asked for a new one and she replied, “Are you sure it’s not yours?”

The server brought our bills and all I had was a $50; I joked that I didn’t want to break it because then I would just spend it all on my friends. She said,”What if I don’t want to take your fifty?”

I replied, “What if I don’t wanna pay my bill?” Being a server myself I could not believe what was happening!!! We told the manager and he said she has worked there for 5 years and we must have been being disrespectful in some way…

This didn't make a lot of sense to me. It doesn't sound (form the story, at least) that she was purposefully giving you attitude, just that she has a very dry, jaded sense of humor – which works on some tables and ruins the meal for others.

She was awful! I certainly hope you didn't tip her, I wouldn't have.

You and I obviously have very different ideas of what "fun" is. I don't see anything "fun" about her attitude. I think she was very rude and sarcastic.

Go away Edward, your comments have negative ratings which show you are wrong. Lol

In my opinion, it sounds like she had a personality that rubbed you the wrong way, not that she was being purposely rude or mean.

Wow… I hate when these managers stick up for asshole employees…goes both ways though, my boss sticks up for me sometimes. Not when I get bad shit on yelp though

I have mixed feelings about it. Who can honestly say for certain – (unless they were there and knew at least her and the owner personally if they didn't know the entire staff / regulars personally) – if she was truly being rude and sarcastic or if she was thinking she was funny but it wasn't funny to the customers? One shouldn't just assume that somebody is rude and sarcastic just from a story on the 'net when one wasn't there and doesn't really know the server personally. Either way, it's a shame you didn't have a good time and that the manager was rude to you instead of having a chat with the server. But you didn't inform the manager that you had been in the service industry before yourself, right? So that was probably why she – (the manager) – assumed that you must've done something wrong but she still shouldn't have assumed anything and had a talk with the server anyway – intentionally rude server or not. Also, unless dishes got broken and a mess was made…I wouldn't be too concerned about how fast things were put on the table. I mean…seriously? Complaining about how fast things were put down?! Most people would love to have that "problem" with their servers since there are tons of stories about people having to wait too long for their food…."Do you want me to hold your coffee and keep you company while you eat?" That's funny. But unprofessional. However, the last two comments, the one about the hair in the coffee "Are you sure it's not yours?" and "What if I don’t want to take your fifty?" certainly WERE rude, immature, and unprofessional comments. She should've gotten a talking to for at least that much.

I think she just had a dry wit and the customers were typical Americans with their usual irony deficit.

I'm sure this isn't exactly how it went down.
