Dip Cup Couple

in Diner Stories

I work at an upscale bar, a dive bar, and a family run Italian restaurant. I have been in the restaurant business for almost twenty years and I have never encountered such stupidity. Anyhow, I usually get asked for a “dip cup” or a “spit cup” in the bars, but tonight I was asked at the Italian restaurant.

I prepared the cup like I normally do… a beverage napkin stuffed to the bottom of a cup. I always ask the person who needs the cup to dispose of the cup on their way out. Never have I had a person complain about throwing their spit cup away. Well, tonight was different. I dropped the cup off that I prepared so neatly and asked the gentleman to dispose of it on his way out. His stupid ass f*** girlfriend replies, “We have never been asked to do that.”

Well, in my mind I’m thinking, “You stupid f*** white trash person. Who would ask for a “dip cup” in a restaurant?” Anyhow I reply back, “Well, I have been in the restaurant industry long enough that I don’t need to throw your spit away.”

I guess that offended the white trash girlfriend because this is what she left me on the receipt which I kept: “We are locals who come here once or twice a week. My husband is an amazing tipper which you will see from this check. However, we were offended by being told to take our cup with us. Any server who claims being in the industry as long as you have should know NOT to offend the customer who PAYS YOU!” Can you believe this???

Well, I couldn’t control myself which I regret, and I did call her a bitch. Long story short, I left the 20% tip in an envelope labeled “Dip Cup Couple” so next time they come in they can have their money back.

No, I didn’t throw the cup away. I did call out to them as they were leaving that they forgot the cup. Stupid bitch moans and takes the cup out of my hands (which I was holding in a cloth napkin) and slams the spit cup on the bar and yells what awful service she had.

I have worked at this restaurant for almost 20 years and never have I experienced such stupidity for a white trash bitch. I hope they come up and get their tip ($20) because I sure don’t need it from them. Again, why would anyone want to throw someone else’s spit cup away??? So RUDE!

In before the "it's your job to do whatever the disgusting customer wants and you should change professions blah, blah blah…" crowd.

These people are disgusting d-bags. Chewing tobacco is gross and expecting someone else to clean up your carcinogen laden saliva is beyond disrespectful.

Although it’s a nasty habit I really fail to see how disposing of this cup or disposing of anything else on the table is any different? They aren’t asking you to stick your hand into the cup, just to throw it out. Is the outside of the cup coated in saliva after its use? I suspect, and hope, you would wash your hands regularly as a restaurant employee so having to wash them one more time doesn’t seem to be too big of a deal. That said, if you ask them to throw it out I don’t see that as unreasonable.

Biological waste is not the same as picking up the dirty plates. Would you have a problem with picking an used tampon or crumpled kleenex? If not, you are sick.

their utensils, plates and glasses all have biological waste on them (saliva), so that's a moot point. It's hardly the same thing as picking up a used tampon.

I have a son who chews. Have you ever smelled the stench that comes from said spit cups? It's atrocious. Like bad breath, bacteria & wintergreen. Ugh.

Ha! I had a guy sittiing at my bar who had grabbed a shot glass and was spitting into it. I asked him what the hell was wrong with him. He was like, "oh, is this bad?" I said YES you dirty f*ck. These are glasses people will drink out of …. well not this one. I threw it in trash. His friends were like…well, what should he do. So I got him a disposable cup with the napkins in the bottome… GROSS!!

I have NEVER heard of this "dip cup". UGH, people do this? I swear people get trashier and trashier every day.

Honestly, I can't say handling someone's "spit cup" would bother me. I only say this because I work at a seafood restauarnt where I touch oyster shells (people suck on them) and crab legs and shells with my bare hands. People always leave them all over the table! So I'm very used to handling saliva.

I have never heard of a spit cup and I wish I still hadn't! That is the grossest thing i've ever heard. Why would anyone chew tobacco in a restaurant? What is the point to paying to eat out then ruining the meal with chewing tobacco!!

Where is this restaurant located – Kentucky or Tennessee?

Great god almighty I thought you were talking about the dip cup like for sauce for your meat or veg. Never before today have I heard of this. Now I can only hope I never see it. I know I won't touch it. And the one dude really expected to leave the spit in the glass and have it reused? I'm getting ill. So much for drinking.

Spitting into a cup at the table in a restaurant is disgusting. So is blowing your nose in a napkin and leaving it on the table to be disposed of. But shit happens. However telling a customer they must dispose of it themselves, than yelling at them as they leave the restaurant is also, if not disgusting, at least ignorant. Perhaps you both got your locations screwed up that night, and both of you thought you were in the dive bar. If I owned the restaurant, you would be looking a job.

id like to weigh in on both sides of this story. first being, i admit i made the extremely poor choice of picking up the bad habit of using chewing tobacco. as most will tell you, this is more addictive and has stronger cravings than smoking, and how many people have ever smoked in a restaraunt, or smoked after a meal or in a bar? so it stands to reason that one who chews will have the same urges. now i understand that most people find the habit of spitting disgusting under any light, but that being said, chew spit isnt any more disgusting or toxic or germ infested than other kind of spit. as a matter of manners, i do try and chew as discreetly as possible so not to offend anyone, and i never would chew in a restaraunt or in a bar. that being said, while having a cup with enough saliva to see puddled up isnt appealing, what do you think is all over the cups, silverware and napkins that you have to clean up after? not all people eat every bite of food they eat so after chewing it and deciding they dont like it they spi it out (hopefully on a napkin) and leave it on the table or plate, which i find far worse than a cup with spit. like the previous poster said, was there spit all over the outside of the cup? if not that technically is cleaner than cleaning up the used napkins silverware, etc. if the spit is on the outside of the cup, its easy enough to graba spare napkin or washrag to pick the cup up to throw away. to the person who had a meltdown over a shot glass being used to spit in, do you not think that saliva gets on/in the glass that people drink out of? between the tobacco that probly kills some germs, as the glass is washed, it should be washed using hot water, antibacterial type soap then ran through a sanitizer so that any possible germs left there are removed so spitting in it would not have any affect on it, provided its cleaned properly in the first place. while it was extremely unclassy for the man to spit into a nice bar glass in the first place, it was equally as unclassy for you to take it from him and make such a big deal out of it as well. back to the OP, once again i agree witht the fact that the man should not have been dipping in the restaraunt in the first place but let me ask you, would you rather him spit on the table, in a glass or dish that is already there or even on the floor? because then you would have been responsible for cleaning that as weel, which is a lot more difficult than simply throwing away a cup… whether or not it was "white trash" of them to do this, there was no way that the woman would have flipped out on you so unprovoked unless you caused it, such as purpoely embarassing them in front of a crowd of people? im sorry but there is no way that you could have "been in the business" for 20 years and not have seen enough rude people to keep your cool no matter what, so you need to get off your high horse. unless of course is if the restraunt is family owned, and they wouldnt fire you for any reason. while it was crude of them to act that way, you were the one out of line and truly hope that the management sent you on your way…

Have to disagree on the statement that the woman wouldn't have gone off on him unless he provoked it. Have you seen people lately? I've seen too many occasions to count of people going off on someone who made a completely rational request. My answer to all of it is to maybe make establishments tobacco free instead of smoking free. As for all the arguments about saliva residue on utensils & plates, it's quite different. There's always a chance of the cup spilling as you're carrying it. Utensils have "residue", a cup of globby, disgusting tobacco laced spit spilling down my hand is just too gross to deal with. Maybe it's just me but I couldn't handle it.

Anyone stupid enough to chew tobacco in the first place shouldn't be allowed in restaurants, period.

Gross, if I was out for dinner and had someone at the table next to me spitting constantly, I'd lose my appetite and complain.

You are not in charge of this guy's bodily fluids. This spitting should not be permitted in an eating place.

Well that dude's getting mouth cancer anyway and won't be laughing when the GF leaves him and his big gaping cancer hole in his face.
