Restaurant Has Huge Problems

in Odds & Ends Stories

I work at a restaurant. It’s a small one. It’s American and Chinese. We serve breakfast also. There are so many things wrong with this place.

First off the managers. They are an Oriental husband and wife. They own two restaurants. I work at the one as a waitress. The wife is never there so she doesn’t know anything that goes on. The husband understands English. They both have their own ways of doing things. The old owner still works there as a cook. She does the best she can under the circumstances and things she’s given. The Oriental couple will not listen to anything she or any of her employees say.

The food – they keep trying to go cheaper and cheaper. The husband won’t even let the old owner cook and do her job; he’ll push her out of the way or take the spatula out of her hand and leave her not knowing where she left off.

We have employees who come in drunk. And others who take pictures of the boss while he’s asleep during open hours. We have waitresses crying because they got yelled at for asking for clean cups when there’s a rush. It’s just very chaotic there. It’s a sight to see.

We have the husband who serves terrible food. Even if it’s old/moldy he’ll still serve it. We have a whole paper full of complaints that we need to give out free meals for because it was forgotten in an order or to-go order.

We have waitresses working doubles because they are too cheap to hire another waitress. All of our employees and staff are extremely unhappy. This place needs some serious help.

I’ve been with this Oriental couple for seven years. Their restaurants are just disgusting. They would get shut down by the Health Department for dirty things; plates, cups, silverware.

Another thing, we cannot accept credit card tips. We can accept credit cards but there’s no tip spot on the card; the owners say it costs too much to replace the machine. We have so many very unhappy customers because of that and we lose out on so many tips. We have also had paychecks bounce because they don’t have enough funds in their account. There are so many times I’ve wanted to just leave this place, but I love my coworkers and customers too much to do that. This place needs help and hopefully we can get it.

Sounds like you need to call Gordon Ramsey or the health department and find a new job…

Yep! Most definitely! You should notify the Health department and FIND a new job, pronto! (or as soon the "economy" lets you "find/get" one!.)

This restaurant sounds awful, and I wish you the best, but can you please enter this millennium and stop using the term "Oriental" to refer to humans? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?stor

With all due respect your paychecks bounce, you can't process tips by credit cards and the kitchen at times puts out moldy food yet you stay working at this restaurant. Worse yet you believe help will fix the situation. The best action you and you co-workers can do is to leave the job, quit. Things are not going to change and you will continue to knowingly serve moldy food to diners. And on your way out call the Health Department.

I agree with Anon–using the term "Oriental" is outdated at best and racist at worst. The word is "Asian".

That could mean anything as well. Asian could mean Arab, Russian, Indian for instance. If you want to be general but slightly more specific you could say 'East Asian' or Southeast Asian'.

I don't know why you stay. so what you like your co workers but you cant even get a credit card tip. Come on use some common sense and get another job. I worked for some Mongolians and they did there things there way. they hired all there friends so I was the only white server. While I gave great service the others did not and I had to pick up the slck constantly. I had to leave wasn't easy because I made great money but there are serving jobs everywhere

So you've worked there for seven years serving moldy food, putting up with bounced paychecks, drunken employees. Are you looking for pity? Just how stupid are you?
