Food Disguised to Fool Diner

in Food & Drink Stories

My husband and I, along with another couple, dined at a 5 star Italian restaurant to celebrate a birthday. We had been to this restaurant one other time and very much enjoyed our experience. We like to order plenty of appetizers to share while waiting for our dinner and all was very good.

The server brought out our dinners and my order was a striploin, not the beef tenderloin I had ordered. I assumed they mixed up my order, but when I told the server about it he insisted it was a tenderloin, just looked like a striploin. OK? He explained it had to do with a muscle in the beef. However, I know my beef and he was incorrect.

So he took it back and said he would bring the right order. He came back in less than two minutes with a round-shaped steak (tenderloin shape) and walked away. It looked rather odd but I took his word for it. However, when I cut into it, the meat was more on the dense side and tasted like striploin.

I called him over to speak with him about it, and he explained that the kitchen took the original order he served me and made it into a circle shape so that I would feel more confident it was a tenderloin. I could not believe that not only did the kitchen do that, but the server explained it as a matter of fact, lol.

We dine out quite often and I appreciate all the work that the entire staff does, and I am not one to complain or expect or want anything for free. It’s just not me, and when our server insisted my dinner was free I was at a loss for words, but he insisted. I felt bad but gave them two thumbs up for creativity ??

Guess when you eat at an Italian restaurant you are best eating Italian food.

I always feel sorry for waitstaff that have to deal with customers that don't actually understand which cut of meat they are ordering.

And how exactly did she not understand? Sounds to me like she knew exactly what she ordered and what she got. And it was not correct. When she asked, they then just cut the meat to LOOK the same as the correct one and hoped for the best. I always feel sorry for customers that restaurants try to trick and screw over just to make a buck.

Concluded as an edgy but humorous win-win, with the obvious take-away: When in Rome…
