A friend and I were having lunch together one day and decided to each order a sandwich/burger and split an order of fries. We got our sandwiches and put the plate of fries between us and began to eat. Everything tasted good as expected, but when we got down to the last few fries we saw a piece of chewing gum stuck to the plate. Yes… it had been chewed! We told our waitress about it and in a very unsurprised manner she said “I won’t charge you for the fries!”
A Sticky Situation

I suppose you entire meal could have been comped. Once you ate the french fries, not much could be done. Did you ask for the manager?
The gum may have been a little disgusting, but imagine a dead roach on the plate.
LOL, i'm sorry but thats pretty funny. At least you got the fries free. 🙂
Lucky you I wasn't your waiter, I had charged you one $ for chewing gum.
Disgusting. Although, I once worked at a place where every other table had a complaint about their plates being dirty, and I was never surprised. Management wouldn’t fix the problem. I couldn’t touch the plate until the food was on it and it had been sent through a 500 degree oven…so there was no wiping it off before I took it to the table either; it was BAKED on.
Needless to say, I found a new job pretty fast since, despite the dirty dishes NOT being my fault, my tips suffered.
I had one table find a roach IN their sour cream once. I almost vomited at the table. We comped the entire meal (for four), gave them gift cards, and they left immediately. They tipped me $12, so I was happy with the tip, but I felt horrible about their food.
Sounds like you may have supplied the roach.
Pardon?
The gum was probably due to an apathetic dishwasher who does not look at the plates before putting them on the line. Also, to an inept cook (or very busy one) who did not look at the plate before plating the french fries.
That being said, the person who really is to blame for this is the nasty, slack-jawed customer who put thier ABC gum on a plate instead of the trash. Its like the person who leaves thier snot drenched tissues on the table for the server to clean up. Remember folks, this is a restaruant. We dont have Bio-Hazard trash bags for bodily fluids like they do in hospitals.
