My sister and I dined at a well-regarded French restaurant in Providence, Rhode Island, where the food turned out to be excellent but the service something less. The coup de grace came when our waiter brought the (rather expensive) bottle of wine we ordered. Declaring that he wasn’t sure if it was properly chilled, he poured some in a glass and drank it! Then he left us with the rest of the bottle. I guess we should be glad he didn’t want to make sure our food was warm enough!

Maybe he just desperately needed a drink!!! We once had a waitress bring us two martinis instead of our ordered manhattans. When we remined her she apologized and took the drinks away and set them aside and quickly brought us the correct order. I observed her sipping on these martinis the entire time we were there for dinner.
Hmmm…I wondered how often she mixed up orders.
That's awesome! You should've invited him to sit down. =)
Just to let you know, in French style service, the sommelier ALWAYS tastes the wine first to insure it hasn't been corked or otherwise tainted. It is rather old school, but not unheard of in an upscale restaurant.
