Yesterday evening my husband and I went out to a well known restaurant in Tampa, Florida for what we thought would be an uneventful dinner. The restaurant is a wonderful sports grill founded by one of Tampa’s football heroes.
Immediately after being seated in a booth, I put my purse beside me and all of a sudden a full glass of water and ice came tumbling down from a ledge on the back of the booth falling smack dab into my purse, drenching my cell phone and everything else in it. I was left to empty all items in my purse onto the table and pour out the excess water and ice!
Meanwhile, the young woman who did it never said “I’m sorry,”or “May I get you some napkins to help clean it up?” She was snooty about it and left the area immediately. Even though this was not the fault of the restaurant, the manager and employees were so helpful and courteous and even took care of our dinner check.
Luckily, my cell phone still works and my purse and the items in it dried out overnight. I realize that accidents do happen, but it would have been nice if the young woman who knocked the glass over would have taken a little personal responsibility and just said “I’m sorry!”

Was the woman who spilled the water an employee or a patron of the restaurant? Totally unacceptable if she was an employee, but I can definitely see a rude patron simply leaving the scene without a word after spilling the water. At least the establishment took care of you 🙂
Received clarification that it was a patron and not an employee, which makes what the restaurant did even more impressive!
I hope you left a big fat tip on that, considering your free food and the fact that the sever/restaurant had nada to do with your (sadly soggy) purse.
I hate people like that. If it had been me, I'd of apologized and offered not only to assist you in cleaning things up, but to pay for the cell should it not work. It was REALLY nice of the restaurant staff to help you. And I'm sure you showed your gratitude.
Rude for sure! A dinner from hell? Not really.
Thanks for sharing your story. I cannot believe that the young lady who knocked the drink over left immediately. Sounds like something an Obama lover would do. She should have immediately offered to assist and even to pay had the phone been damaged. I am sure that you would not have made her pay but it would have been the right thing to do. I hope that your evening improved after the incident and that it did not ruin your night.
an obama lover? really?
Yesterday, I was walking down the street and tripped over a raised bit of sidewalk, hurling the ice cream cone I had just bought straight to the ground. THANKS OBAMA.
get a life, rick-o
Mike, sorry to hear about your Ice Cream. Had all that Obama stimulus money been put to use you would have had a beautiful sidewalk to walk on while enjoying your ice cream.
I know! Too bad the GOP blocks every job/public works bill on the table.
I do appreciate a good zing, though. Wish I still had that ice cream so I could apply it to the burn you just laid on me.
You people blame Obama for everything. He's helping us out. He wants to help me by taking some of your money and giving it to me so I can eat out once in a while – is that so bad? Just because I can't work because I have a hurt knee doesn't mean I don't deserve to eat out once in a while too. THANK YOU OBAMA!
Is this website about dining or politics?
Great point Beth. Let's keep on topic.
