Diaper Dilemma

in Kid Stories

While enjoying my meal at a nice restaurant, I noticed a couple at a nearby table with a baby. Although they doted on the baby during their entire meal, it didn’t bother me much since the baby was well behaved.

Later on in the evening I noticed that several servers were crowded around the couple’s table. The expressions on their faces were a mixture of anger, revulsion and disbelief. I heard one of them say, “That’s sick!” I was able to eventually see that before the family departed they had left a used diaper on the table!

The servers kept staring at the diaper while talking disparagingly about the filthy family; none of them seemed to know what to do to resolve the matter. Finally someone said that another server, “Jenny,” used to work in a nursing home, so she should remove it. One of the servers walked into the kitchen and soon thereafter the poor ex-nursing home worker came out and disposed of the dirty diaper.

Of course my appetite was ruined by this experience. People can be such pigs!

I hope the couple paid by credit card so the restaurant can track them down. They need to made to understand that changing or leaving a dirty diaper at their table is not only highly inapproriate, but probably violates restaurant health codes.

That being said, I feel bad for the server they basically forced to remove the diaper from the table.

Believe it or not, it happens more often than you think. It's hardly an 'all the time' occurance, but you still wouldn't believe how many inconsiderate pigs actually change babies in restaurant booths.

You would think the parents would have had the common sense to throw the diaper under the table, or perhaps hid it, in one of the potted plants. That way everyone could have wondered about the odor.

That reminds me about the time my husband and I dined at a nice restaurant, but kept smelling a foul odor. It was really hard to maintain a romantic mood, and to enjoy our food. I discovered the source of the odor when I kicked a diaper that was underneath the table. Fortunately our meals got comped.

I've seen this before. Disgusting.

I have to laugh- the daiper yes inappropriate. What I find funny is the OP stating that they were not bothered "much" by the mere presence of a well behaved baby.
So as soon as they sat down they already found problems with others… get a life.

Reminds me a few years back while traveling with my wife in Costa Rica. Just before the entrance to Cahita National Park we ate in one of those local casual open air restaurant with a tatched roof, long tables and benches in the evening. While eating, a white guy (North American?) with his family on the other side proceeded to clean with his finger between his toes having a foot on the bench. I was getting up to go over to say something but my wife st. Reluctendly I sat down again since I didn't want to have two fights in one evening.

A few years ago my husband and I were in the lounge at a popular Mexican restaurant chain. The lounge was rather large and on the other side of the lounge sat a man with an infant child in serious need of a diaper change. We could smell clear across the room that the diaper was "fully loaded." The bartender came out from behind the bar, gave the man a peck on the cheek and proceeded to change the diaper right on the table that also held food and drink. (There was a diaper changing station in the ladies room.) She then returned to her position behind the bar with dirty diaper in hand, disposed of it into bus pan that held dirty dishes and flatware and proceeded to make cocktails, never washing her hands and yes the dirty diaper was still stinking up the lounge. I damn near tossed my cookies but held them in check while I went to find the manager. I doubt she was even allowed to finish her shift but I'll never know since we cancelled our food order and left. I still have trouble even wanting to go to any Mexican restaurant and have since learned how to cook my own Mexican dishes in my very clean kitchen.
